honoured with the title “Salmon Capital Of Ireland”. But for the
versatile fisherman Ballina is you playground! Below we attempt to
touch on the fast array of fishing available to you in Ballina and the
Surrounding areas.

variety of quality angling to suit all tastes and budgets. The season runs from the first of February to the end
ofSeptember. All legal methods are
permitted on the Moy, but anglers are requested to check with ghillies and
owners to confirm local rules. The Ridge Pool alone has produced up to 2,660
Salmon to rod and line in a single season.
Shore Fishing
Enniscrone is a short drive (10
Minutes) from Ballina. Enniscrone pier provides bottom fishing for conger,
dogfish and occasional ray, float fishing for wrasse and spinning for coalfish,
mackerel and Pollack. The strand at Enniscrone is good for surf fishing,
particularly in autumn, for dab, flounder and dogfish and occasional sea trout.
Sea trout never move far from the shore, estuaries and rocky outcrops make up
the bulk of their feeding areas the Moy estuary which is located at the end of
the Enniscrone beach is one such location and provides for excellent sea trout fishing.
Sea Angling
Irish deep-sea fishing is
associated with charter boats and is a very sociable form of angling. charter
boats can be hired from Enniscrone &
Killala. Killala Bay, is famous for its specimen fish and
supplied the Irish record John Dory. You
can fish for such species as blue shark, grey, red and tub gurnard, ling and Pollack.
Other species include coalfish, cod, conger, ray, skate, tope and turbot. and
flatfish over sandy ground. Charter boat fishing is lively and interesting even
before a line is cast; the skipper will assemble a group of anglers who may or
may not know each other at the beginning of the day, but who will surely be
well acquainted by the end of it, especially if they have had sport with a big
shark or skate. Usually tackle may be hired or even supplied, so all the angler
needs is a good set of waterproofs and a sense of adventure. The skippers have
well equipped speedy craft and modern navigational aids but for most, who have
come from several generations of fishermen, their knowledge of the sea is as
instinctive as breathing. A lot of local lore is passed on during the day and
even more in the evening when the boat is tied up and the catch distributed and
the scene shifts to a pub.
